How do I check if there's a power outage in my area? ›

Uncommon in Michigan, rolling blackouts happen when there is an inadequate supply of power and certain areas are scheduled to be shut off, rotating which areas can be supplied with power. They usually occur when there are unstable grids or an infrastructure that was not built to handle extreme capacities.

Average Duration of Power Outages

On average, most technical or minor outages in the USA last about 1-2 hours. However, those caused by major natural disasters can extend for days or even weeks.

As the USDA notes in Keeping Food Safe During an Emergency, your refrigerator will keep food safe for up to 4 hours during a power outage. Keep the door closed as much as possible. Discard refrigerated perishable food such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and leftovers after 4 hours without power.

A sustained outage may be caused by storms, accidents or equipment damage. Sometimes, however, it's necessary for us to intentionally interrupt service in order to safely perform equipment repairs and maintenance. We notify customers in advance of a planned interruption whenever possible.

Televisions, computer equipment, game consoles, fans, lights and all other smaller appliances should be unplugged, especially if they were in use when the power went out. Larger appliances, such as refrigerators, should not be unplugged.

You will receive a $38 outage credit if you have more than 6 interruptions in 12 months. The interruptions must last at least 5 minutes to qualify. Once the credit is paid, the number of interruptions resets to zero. Your utility will add the credit to your account once you qualify.

For customers who are having trouble paying their final balance by the due date, DTE provides an additional 60 day grace period before reporting any unpaid balance to credit reporting agencies.
