Delay For Indians Until 1961 State Legislature Drafts Resolution For Menominees MADISON (PG) Termination of federal government supervision over the Menominee Indian tribe of Shawano and Oconto Counties, hailed as Indianonany significant act In policy when 1 authorized by Congress two years ago, may be deferred until 1961, according to current expressions of interested state officers and the Indians themselves. Senator Hugh Jones of Wausau, whose legislative district includes the Indian territory, is the author of a legislative resolution scheduled for approval that will petition Congress to defer the effective termination date from the end of 1958 to June 30, 1961. Likely to Pass The Congress is expected to pass such an amendment, already in the hopper under the name of Rep. Melvin R. Laird of the Wisconsin seventh district.

Sen. Jones is vice chairman of a commission of state officials which has been helping the Indian tribal council in preparing a plan for the management of the Indians affairs under the termination agreement. The commission and the Indians have worked diligently, but they have not yet been able to evolve a satisfactory plan. Plan Is Required Under present law such a plan must be submitted to the Secretary of the Interior for his approval before the termination of federal control can be effected. The Jones resolution also declares that "it is absolutely essential that the Wisconsin legislature have two legislative sessions in which to consider legislation which may become necessary because of termination," which was a reference to the possible necessity for amendment of the state constitution to accommodate the local machinery requirements of the Indian tribe.
